22 june tfln - how evaluation can inform learning design

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

I invite you to join Kirsty Sharp as she shares her knowledge and experience in using evaluation to inform learning design. kirsty sharp

Evaluating and reflecting on what we have done  is an essential life skill: in the rush of content creation and course preparation the final stage, evaluation and reflection, is often loses out to the next job on the list

Kirsty, who is Resource Development Manager at the Tasmanian Polytechnic, will show us how to avoid this trap and suggest ways to make evaluation purposeful and constructive.  As always, there will be time set aside for discussion and sharing of ideas.

when: 4 pm - 5 pm, Tuesday 22 June, 2010

brain science and learning design

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Yesterday’s TLFN was well attended, with an excellent and thoughtful presentation from robin (petterd) and great discussion around the topic. Thanks to all who attended for their contributions. It was great to see many new faces around the table.

For those who couldn’t make the session in person or online, the ustream.tv was recorded and is available at  http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/6664492

And his presentation is at http://prezi.com/kflz0nbdf20y/brain-science-and-learning-design/.

Robin will do a follow up blog from the session soon …. he is in Sydney at the moment attending the Serious Games Bar Camp.

What were my immediate take aways:

fear is a great motivator for learning but not to stress people so much that they can’t learn;

stories and scenarios are great ways to engage learners and support their learning;

we remember by building on already existing networks in the brain;

a maximum of four ideas/issues at a time may be the most the ’stage’ of our brain can hold at once.

So I guess that’s it for me :)

tfln: brain science and learning design

Robin Petterd will lead a discussion about how brain science and learning design interact…

“Today’s revolutionary advances in neuroscience will rival the discoveries of Copernicus, Galileo and Darwin.” Paul Churchland(1996)

While there are dozens of learning theories, they can often be hard to apply in practice. Brain sciences give us another place to look for insights on how to design, develop and implement learning experiences.

During the session we will look at what the following things mean for learning design:

• That the brain is a connection machine

• Everyone’s connections are different

• How the brain can manage complexity

• What roles stories have to play in memory

Robin is  founder and principal of Sprout Labs. To find out more information about Robin click here.

clint smith at the tasmanian flexible learning network

The Tasmanian Flexible Learning Network continues in 2010 and our first meeting will be:on 15 March 2010at 4.15 pm - 5.15 pmin the Skills Tasmania Boardroom, Level 1/99 Bathurst Street, Hobart.We will also U-stream the presentation and discussion for our non-Hobart-based colleagues. Our channel is at http://www.ustream.tv/user/tflg. If you haven’t used Ustream before please get in touch with me and we can do a test run.clint smithI’m delighted that Clint Smith, who presented at tas-eday09, will be our first presenter.Workforce development is a topical issue for the VET sector, both for the sector itself and how training can support workforce development. In this increasingly technology enabled environment developing e-capability is essential.Clint will build on the work of John Mitchell (jma.com.au) who recently surveyed over 2000 VET practitioners on their capabilities for the advanced practices now required in VET, including for e-learning.Clint has developed a self-assessment tool for RTOs to profile their e-capability. He will talk briefly about the findings from the survey, introduce the E-capability Forum he is setting up, and preview the E-capability tool, which will be available for you to use for your own organisation.Wherever your organisation is on the e-capability continuum, the TLFN meeting will be a great opportunity to hear the latest thinking on e-capability development and to discuss with Clint how you might use the tool in your organisation to develop plans for increasing your organisation’s e-capability. This approach can also be applied to organisation’s you are providing training for - because they also need to develop some degree of e-capability.Please let me know if you are able to attend.
